The Christmas Pickle

Christmas...Yule...Hanukkah...Festivus....lots of traditions for the winter festivals that we have every year.

In terms of traditions that I hadn't heard of till a few years ago that I think is pretty cool is the Christmas Pickle.

I saw a pickle hanging from a friend's window blinds one day close to the holidays, and asked....why a pickle?

It wasn't a real was one that was just an ornament.

The pickle is meant to help people looking for the pickle to see the rest of the tree, and gain appreciation for the one who took the time, love and care to decorate it.  The pickle is usually hidden somewhere on the tree on Christmas Eve or Christmas day.  It's usually meant for the kids to find before they open their presents.  The one who finds the pickle gets an extra present.

There are many theories and stories as to how the Christmas Pickle came into being.  It is said to have originated in Germany.

I have a Flying Spaghetti Monster on my tree, but no pickle, but if you want to make one, below are some patterns so you can make your own.

Here is a link I found for a crochted pattern for one:

And one for a knitted one:

And one that is sewn with felt and a cute santa hat to go with it.

New links, and finishing UFOs

Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. I have been working on some comissions to finish up, and Im not going to post a pic every time I knit another Jayne hat. However, I worked on my crazy quilt a bit today, I finished yet another two Jayne hats since I last posted, a dress for a LARP shindig, started spinning some yarn from roving I got for xmas, but I also started a Tumblr.

The link to my new Tumblr page is

Now don't worry, I will still update and I do plan on doing some more tutorials.

In the meantime, here's some more photos of what I've been working on.

For starters, my cat being ever so helpful behind the sewing machine.

An Appa hat for someone who had requested one.

A flying sphagetti monster for my hubby, that also works as a x-mas tree topper (sorry about the not the greatest pic, a better one will be taken later)

Some experiments with bento lunches

Some of the yummy yarn I was mentioning earlier...

...and a Fluttershy tee for my hubby as well. He likes the pegasus ponies.

Edit: sorry about the photo errors. Apparently I can't port photos over from tumblr directly.

Fall wall quilt, and pants

First off, we have some pants. I got these cargos at Old Navy dirt cheap cause someone had accidently bleached the bottoms in certian spots. The ladies at the store made double sure I knew they were damaged. I just told them I was going to mod them even more. The original color was grey. So, I used some bleach in a spray bottle, and went to town. Aftwarwards, I got all the bleach out and dyed them red with Tintex dyes I got at the dollar store.

Afterwards, I got myself a stencil, and a rub-a-dub marker (aka permenant black marker that doesnt come out in the wash) and stenciled a few things.

This is the photo of the back

And this is a pic of the front

Secondly, I wanted a nice and colorful wall hanging for fall. Not a Hallowe'en one (believe me I have ideas for skeletons), but more of one for the harvest and Thanksgiving, which isn't all that far off if you think about it (especially since the kids go back to school in less than 2 weeks).

This one was fun to do. Thankfully it wasn't that hard to layer since I do draw in my spare time, and designed the whole thing myself with no help. The only thing I still have troubles doing is bias tape casings on the outside. It just seems very fidgity to me for some reason.

Enviro friendly pens, ink and chalk

I recently posted back to Threadbanger on some ideas on how to make dip pen ink.

For those of you who might have an INKling to make a dip pen and some ink, either for a journal, a drawing, or just something fun to do... then this one is for you.

To make homemade ink, the easiest one is this one below:

1/2 cup of water
4-5 teabags
gum arabic

boil all of the above (dont use too much gum arabic or your ink could flake) and let steep for 15-20 mins. Strain as much out of the teabags as possible. Let cool before bottling

I suggest perhaps using a tidbit of salt and some vinegar to make it so your mix doesnt go rancid. If you want it to smell nice, you can use one or two drops of essential oils. You can also use anything that will leak out a color. I made one using a combination of blueberries and tea. It didnt turn out that blue/purple, but it gave it a nice smell.

I also suggest reducing it a bit to thicken it up and to darken the color before straining into a bottle or jar.

For my batch, I also used a few drops of food dye, and some gum tragacanth to thicken my batch up.

By the way, the recipe for homemade chalk

6-8 white eggshells
1 tablespoon flour
1 tablespoon lukewarm water
1/8th tablespoon white glue

-Grind eggshells into fine powder in mortar and pestle
-mix all ingredients till it makes a thick paste
-shape and wrap in wax paper and leave to dry for about 3 days, and slowly unroll the wax paper as the chalk dries
-you can substitute eggshell for bones, or seashells. Ive also seen recipes that call for talc powder

People then started asking me what the heck Gum Arabic and Gum Tragacanth were.

Gum arabic is a 'gum' kinda like tree fact thats exactly what it is, that comes out of trees, that is used as a suspender and thickener for inks, and is generally known as a food stabalizer, and its generally used for coating candies and stuff

Gum arabic is a key ingredient in traditional lithography and is used in printing, paint production, glue, and various industrial applications

I know the art supplier makers Windsor & Newton sell it to be used to make thicker textures of paint for gauche and such, and Ive seen it at my local art supply stores. You might also be able to get food grade gums at your local cake decorating or bulk food stores...kinda like citric just have to ask

As for Gum Tragacanth, I got my bottle at Tandy Leather for burnishing sides of belts and such ( I will get around to doing a leather carving tutorial eventually) Gum Tragacanth can also be used to make pastels, and homemade chalk from bone or eggshells.
